Unemployed Expected to Boost Holiday Sales
The economy is in recession and consumer confidence is sagging, but government officials today said there may be a secret weapon buried within the mountain of negative economic data: the nation’s growing legions of unemployed, who will now have more time to shop. “Just finding the time to shop has always been one of the biggest dilemmas facing the gainfully employed,” said Treasury Secretary Paul O’Neill. “But today, more people are out of work than at any time in the past five years, meaning that more people will now have the free time to get out and spend money on cars, electronics, and other consumer goods.”
