I Write Optimo, You Write Otimo…
Portugal’s parliament has voted to introduce contentious changes to the Portuguese language in order to spell hundreds of words the Brazilian way. The agreement standardises numerous spellings and adds three letters – k, w and y – to the alphabet.
I had only just about properly learned the Portuguese way, too.
I do actually prefer the Portuguese spellings over the Brazilian versions, and not just because I know the Portuguese versions better, it is just that the Portuguese spellings seem more ‘naturally Portuguese’ to me, but on the other hand it is true that I prefer Brazilian accents to the Portuguese versions as Brazilian is more ‘open’ and easier to speak and understand, for me at least.
Anyhow, from now on it is Brazilian spelling for us here in Portugal, like it or not, although strangely enough most Portuguese who have mentioned it say that they think they might as well use the Brazilian spellings as that is how Portuguese is spoken anyway. Which is true.
