Yves ‘Jetman’ Rossy – Not Quite.

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Yves Rossy did not make it from Morocco to Spain this afternoon.

That’s too bad, but happily he seems to be uninjured by his splash-landing and he will, I hope, make it across on his next attempt.

Until then, I tip my hat to his courage. Bravo.

Man Down: Rob Gauntlett

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

Rob Gauntlett, the young explorer and adventurer mentioned here last year has been killed whilst ice-climbing in Chamonix, France.

Sad news indeed, and it is always a loss to us all when an adventurer so young, who had already achieved so much, dies in the pursuit of one of his objectives.

The world is woefully short of young people with the spirit and drive of Rob Gauntlett, but hopefully what he achieved during his short life will inspire others to attempt to follow suit.

The question now is; can any of them rise to the challenge?

That remains to be seen.

[Update: Condolences also, of course, to the family and friends of James Atkinson, who died in the same ice-climbing incident but who has only just now been officially named by the UK Foreign Office.]

Speaking In Tongues

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

According to research done for the UK government, seven out of ten young British people want to live and work abroad.

Good for them. I seriously recommend that they do just that.

The only thing that I personally would advise any young people with enough of the get-up-and-go spirit to give it a try is that, as the article linked to above also mentions, you really should learn at least one other language besides English.

Preferably the language of the country that you are moving too, but if not then at least learn a latin language well. With English and any of the latin languages under your belt you can get by anywhere to begin with and then you can easily learn the local language once you are in the country of your choice.

Whatever you do, don’t not learn the local language, as if that is your plan you might just as well stay in boring Britain, really.

The Phoenix has landed.

I wonder how long it will be before a photograph from Mars shows a human’s NASA boot?
