Expensive, But Worthless?

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Earlier this morning I noticed an interesting photo gallery in the UK’s Daily Telegraph; A collection of the most expensive and most worthless items in the world.

All of the items shown are without a doubt expensive, but as for them all being ultimately worthless? I’m not so sure.

This watch, for example.

DualTow watch by Christophe Claret

The DualTow watch by Christophe Claret retails for $300,000, but it only displays the time to the nearest five minutes’. As the people behind the blog say: “So you’re paying for a, seemingly, needlessly complicated watch that doesn’t actually tell you the correct time.”

Does only being able to tell the time to within five minutes make that watch worthless? Not in my opinion.

And would I like one of those watches myself?  Yes I would.

Mischievious Translations

“Our nuclear deterrent will be a strong defensive means … as well as a merciless offensive means to deal a just retaliatory strike to those who touch the country’s dignity and sovereignty even a bit,” the state-run Minju Joson newspaper said.

You know, no matter how hard I try, I find it extremely difficult to believe that North Korea, whilst threatening a ‘merciless’ nuclear war, would tack on the end of it those two little words ‘…a bit’.

When threatening a nuclear war, you just wouldn’t say that, would you.

I mean, seriously, they really said ‘…a bit’?  Nah, it never happened.

Che Guevara Was What?

Che Guevara, iconic? Yep.

Che Guevara? iconic? Yep.

It seems that Che Guevara, the famous ‘Cuban revolutionary’, was in fact a half-Irish doctor from Argentina.

Well, who knew?

More details, along with some other quite interesting factettes about the real Che Guevara are over on this List Universe page.

The Eye Of God?

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

This is a picture of, according to the UK’s Daily Telegraph, ‘The Eye Of God’.

The 'Eye Of God'

The 'Eye Of God'

Which would be great except; a) it is not an eye, it is a cloud of gas, and b) there is of course no God.

Other than those two small holes in the theory of what the photo is actually of, I have to agree that it is at least a nice looking image.

Internet Noise Reduction Day

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Step one of my quest for today, to remove the extraneous noise from my interweb life, is now complete.

I have just removed twenty-six feeds from my Google Reader subscription list, leaving me now with ‘only’ ninety-eight feeds. Still too many, but better than one hundred and twenty four, and it’s a start.

Less noise equals more signal, and it’s starting to show.
