Useful: FlightStats Flight Tracking

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

This morning I was looking for a website to live track a flight my daughter was taking from London to Zurich.

air approach track into zurich

However, finding live tracking that covered EU air routes was not as easy as I imagined. The US is well covered, but the EU? Not so much.

After much searching around I eventually discovered FlightStats, which offers just what I was looking for; live mapping, flight status, arrival, departure and delay times, and even free email alerts.

All in all, a very useful tool for EU flight tracking. Recommended.

Eight Years Of RogiLife.Com

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Today marks the eighth anniversary of this weblog, and some might say that the first ever post here set the tone as to how interesting most of the following thousands of posts would be. :)

I could write a book on the different adventures this place has had, from the first days of Blogger.com (“What is a Weblog?”) to GreyMatter to MovableType to pMachine to ExpressionEngine to WordPress, and there were probably yet more scripts in between.

There have been at least three different domain names, and I really cannot remember all of the different servers used, the ISP’s contracted, the different countries and locations that I have typed the posts in – or sometimes even the condition that I was in as I posted them. This blog has been with me through some interesting times, and to coin a phrase David Bowie once used when talking of his wilder days; “You don’t know half the story”.

Some of you reading this have been around right back from the very beginning, and thanks a bunch for that. Thanks also to all of the writers of all the thousands and thousands of comments over the years. Most of those comments have not been transferred between servers and scripts, but I still have them all archived.

Yet more thanks goes out to all of you who have taken the time to write the hundreds, perhaps thousands, of personal emails to me over the years. Whether sharing expertise, pointing out things I might be interested in, recipes, technical help, music, movie and book recommendations, or simply just shooting the breeze, every email was good to get and good to read.

It has been a real blast meeting so many interesting people via this place.

A hat tip fom me to all of you.

Tumblr Photosets

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Just in case I wasn’t already a big fan of the Tumblr.com service (and staff), today they have unleashed new photoset functionality that has so much potential usefulness that it is making my head spin. As they themselves say;

“If a picture is worth a thousand words, photosets are the future of books.”

Indeed, and add to the new photoset function the already existing ability to have multiple ‘Tumblelogs’, then sprinkle in some customisation tags, and, well, pretty quickly it becomes a case of wondering just what can’t be done with it all.

I have no time to experiment tonight, but sometime over the next week photosets are going to get a serious workout. Oh, yes.

Mid-Year Redesign 2009

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

It’s hot, I’m taking a break, I’m in front of two computers, and one is a Mac.

Redesign time.

Done.

~ For future reference, long after this design is gone and forgotten, this redesign can be remembered as ‘the white type on the blue background redesign’.

Just for good measure, I have given micro.rogilife.com the same treatment, too.

Micro.RogiLife.Com Returns

Friday, May 8th, 2009

Another shamelessly self-referential post (more for me than for you – I’m kinda making notes here as I move stuff from server to server).

The Tumblog version of this site, Micro.RogiLife.Com, now finally (re)gains a place in the nav bar above, after a bit of fiddling about getting the A-record to work.

More Micro.RogiLife.Com related posts can be found here.

Done. What’s next?
