CrashPlan Backup – Silent Data Corruption?

Monday, April 12th, 2010

If you are using CrashPlan as one of your backup solutions, you may want to fully read this blog post and then go on to fully read the related thread on CrashPlan’s user forums.

If you are using CrashPlan as your only backup solution, then you absolutely should follow the links above.

There are some serious questions being asked at CrashPlan by users of the service.

[Update: Note that as of 7th May 2010 this has never been satisfactorily resolved or explained. Crashplan are still evasive as to the possible cause of the failed restores, in my opinion. Due to this I personally have completely stopped using Crashplan on all of my systems. See the updated original blog post and the forum thread for the entire story.]

Photo Sites: Minimodi & City Snaps

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

A couple of great photoblogs I have found recently:

The first is Minimodi from Gothenburg, Sweden. Varied subjects, consistently high quality. Click on each image to go to the following image.

The second is City Snaps from San Francisico. Mostly urban work, also of consistently high quality. A great example is this; Hanging Around, which is very nearly a perfect black and white shot, in my opinion.

There are far too many images between the two for me to possibly point out all of my personal favourites – so grab a coffee, sit back, and go see for yourself.

Quote Of The Day 29th November ’09

“Making a fortune is simple. All you need to do is find something worthless and give it value.”

I have no idea who came up with that concept, but he or she was one smart cookie.

AA Gill And A Loss Of Respect

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

I used to have a fair measure of respect for AA Gill. His writing style is interesting, as, I thought, was his attitude to the world that he finds himself in.

However if this story is true;

Gill wrote: “I took him just below the armpit. He slumped and slid sideways. I’m told they can be tricky to shoot: they run up trees, hang on for grim life. They die hard, baboons. But not this one. A soft-nosed .357 blew his lungs out.”

And this really is the sole reason that he shot that Baboon;

“I wanted to get a sense of what it might be like to kill someone, a stranger. You see it in all those films: guns and bodies, barely a close-up of reflection or doubt. What does it really feel like to shoot someone, or someone’s close relative?”

Well then I cannot remember ever losing my respect for anyone as fast as I have just lost my respect for AA Gill.

That’s all, really, I have nothing further to add.

Blair Wit

Friday, October 9th, 2009

I just spotted a witty remark in the comments of an article titled ‘Would Europe back President Blair?’ on the UK Guardian’s comment is free section. It genuinely made me laugh out loud, and I think it needs sharing, so here it is;

Question: Would Europe back President Blair?

Answer: Preferably off a cliff, at the point of a bayonet.

Well said that man/woman.
