OS X Finder Alternatives, and Quicksilver

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

“Love it or hate it, Finder is the default file manager for OS X. But there are other choices out there, and this link offers reviews, screenshots and links to download 10 different alternatives”.

I’m personally using Quicksilver on my trusty personal powerbook and it’s excellent. It takes a little bit of learning and there is a brief (and to begin with quite confusing) transition period whilst you get your head around it, but after that it does nothing short of what it says it will do: “Quicksilver will certainly make you feel as if you have god-like powers”.

Alright, so it doesn’t quite make you feel like it says it will, but it certainly does give you immense power over OS X. And it is fast. Very fast.

So why do people feel the need for Finder alternatives? Why not use Quicksilver to do the same thing and much, much more?

No idea. Maybe I’m missing something.

But I’ll post this link to the replacements review anyway, just in case, you know.

How To Fix Cocoalicious

Sunday, October 1st, 2006

If you, like myself and many other people, have been having trouble getting Cocoalicious to connect to the master list at Del.icio.us since the API was recently changed, here’s the way to fix it.

(I’m using the latest version of Cocoalicious (1.0b43) on OS X 10.4, if you are using a different combination then your mileage may vary with this fix, I have no idea as I have only tried it on my setup).

So, first, start up Cocoalicious, then open preferences and change the API to ‘https://api.del.icio.us/v1’ (without using the quotes). Click ‘save’.

Close the Cocoalicious application (as it still won’t work even having done that).

Here’s the trick bit…

Now open Keychain Access and find the entry for ‘del.icio.us api’. Double click on it and manually change the address (Cocoalicious doesn’t change it itself, for some reason) also to ‘https://api.del.icio.us/v1’ (also without the quotes) and click on ‘save’.

Close Keychain Access.

Fire up Cocoalicious again. You’ll be prompted to enter your password, do that and hit ‘save’.

Wait a few seconds as it connects.

Voila. You should (hopefully) now be re-cocoalicious’ed!

Much good karma and free drinks to Bjoern for figuring this out.

Mac Simplicity

Sunday, January 22nd, 2006

A recipe for Mac simplicity, power and eye-candy goodness:

Just add the Simple Mac desktop background, mix with a little bit of Spotlight, stir both into a bowl of OS X Tiger and bake well onto your Powerbook.

And voilá—no more clutter on the desktop.

The Ultimate Definition Of Wholesome Goodness…

…is one of these.

And yep, I now have one. Mayhem will follow around here, no doubt.
