The UK Guardian’s politics section is running a competition for financial experts in an attempt to unravel Tony Blair’s highly complicated financial arrangements.

Here’s the deal:

Barack Obama Wins ‘Not Bush’ Prize

Meanwhile, Barack Obama has this morning been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. This has, predictably enough, caused half of the world’s population to complain that he does not deserve it. The Nobel people think otherwise;

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” the Norwegian committee said in a statement.

“His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population.”

Personally, I’m half of the mind that this accolade for Obama does seem a little premature considering that he hasn’t actually done anything much, but then again it occurs to me that him not doing anything much is a vast improvement over George Bush when he did anything at all.

So in my humble opinion Barack Obama deserves the prize just for not being George Bush, if nothing else.

The James Purnell resignation letter in full. Released, at 10pm at night, just one day after another cabinet minister’s shock resignation, and just one day before the publication of – what are expected to be – truly terrible Labour Party results in English local and European elections.

If that letter isn’t proof that British politics, when at it’s worse, is really British politics at it’s best, then I don’t know what is.

Behind-the-scenes plots, intrigue, dark whispers, secret collaborations, and, now, a dagger in the dark.

Hubdub Predictions – UK Politics

I just made a whole bunch of Hubdub predictions on UK politics. Some I think are genuinely likely, some I think are ‘Hmm, maybe…’, and, finally, there are a few that are probably just plain ol’ cases of wishful thinking.

Also, keep in mind that I have not actually lived in the UK for almost twenty years, so a lot of these predictions are necessarily based on general tittle-tattle, gossip, and things picked up from TV news, UK online newspapers, and so on. Not the best sources of reliable information, then.

Defend UK Photography: Photorestrict Petition

An official petition has been launched to call for public photography restrictions imposed by the UK’s Counter-Terrorism Act 2008 to be overturned.

The new legislation, introduced by the UK Government on 16 February, makes it a potential crime to take pictures of police officers and other armed forces. The petition, available on the UK Prime Minister’s website, was launched by photographer Simon Taylor.

‘On the 16th of February, the government passed a law (in the Counter Terrorism Act) making it illegal to take a photograph of a police officer, military personnel or member of the intelligence services – or a photograph which “may be of use for terrorism”. This definition is vague at best, and open to interpretation by the police – who under Home Secretary guidelines can “restrict photography in public places”,’ the petition reads.

‘We call for these vague restrictions to be lifted, as they can easily be misused by the police.’

The 2008 Act amends the Terrorism Act 2000 regarding offences relating to information about members of armed forces, intelligence services and police.

The new set of rules, under section 76 of the 2008 Act and section 58A of the Terrorism Act 2000, will target anyone who ‘elicits or attempts to elicit information about (members of armed forces) which is of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism’.

A person found guilty of this offence could be liable to imprisonment for up to 10 years, and to a fine.

A Korean Missile Launch

The North Korean ‘government’ must be feeling a whole lot safer today as in response to this announcement;

North Korea has said it plans to carry out a controversial satellite launch between 4 and 8 April.

The United States, who could easily shoot the missile down, have now said this;

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warned that Washington had “a range of options” it could take if North Korea went ahead with the launch – including, Reuters reported, action in the UN Security Council.

I have predicted h$5000 at 58.71% that President Obama and President Ahmadinejad do not meet at all in 2009.

As I post this I am down h$1985, but time is on my side and I am pretty confident that my prediction will turn out to be correct.
