Spring, Books, Returns, Breaks, Life, And So On…

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

I’m back around after a hectic-yet-nifty two months, and I bring with me to the Algarve (and normal life) some long-awaited springtime.

To prove it, I have uploaded a few pics snapped earlier today to my also-recently-neglected Portugal Life photoblog:

1. Algarve spring carpet.

2. Hillside ruin.

3. Olive tree in Algarve spring.

Yes, those titles are pretty dire, but such is life when you only have a limited amount of keyword choices to keep the search engines onside.

I’m about to take a bit of a break from my regular type of photography, kick back and relax a little, and photograph a lot of the Algarve for a book project of my own. In theory this should mean that the Portugal Life photoblog will see a lot more added to it, though the images that do get added to that are unlikely to be directly from the book, for obvious reasons.

I have plenty of other things going on too, both photography-related and otherwise, so I am likely to be around both virtually here on the blog and physically here in the Algarve for much of this year.

Jonesy’s Jukebox Returns

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Almost a year after his sudden shutdown on Indie 103.1, ex-Pistol turned radio DJ Steve Jones is tentatively back on air with Jonesy’s Jukebox shows pencilled in for every Monday-Friday at noon-1pm (LA time).

Listen in here – Jonesy’s Jukebox Live.

If this isn’t good news to start off the year, then I don’t know what is.

Guerrilla Gardening A Patio

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

Last year, tomatoes, peppers, chillis, aubergines and a host of other things.

This year, flowers. Lots of them.

On the reverse of each of those packets in the photo there are instructions and supposed requirements for the depth the seeds should be planted at, the spaces between each and so on. (Click image for bigger).

Seed Planting Instructions

Obviously, I have taken no notice whatsoever of those and simply put all of the seeds from all of the different packets together in one packet, then shaken it to mix them all together, and then sprinkled the resulting mixture into a big bunch of empty pots.

I figure that is how nature does it, and if it is good enough for nature – it’s good enough for me.

Will it work? I’ll have to wait and see.

Note: the above isn’t really guerilla gardening as you can’t really guerilla garden your own patio; this is real guerilla gardening.

The Return Of The Lifeblog Project

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Missing temporarily after the Great Reboot of ‘09, the Lifeblog Project is back.

The rewrite rules should take care of the single posts, but not the category or the imaging, so the Lifeblog image gallery is now here and the Lifeblog category is here.

Next; the video and cook sections.

Soon, soon…

A Good Day For The Atheist Bus Campaign

Friday, January 23rd, 2009

It has been an interesting day for The Atheist Bus Campaign:

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has ruled in our favour, decided not to investigate the 326 complaints about the Atheist Bus Campaign adverts, and closed the case. Hurray!

It’s a great day for freedom of speech in Britain. Atheists are officially allowed to be represented in public for the very first time (adverts are not pre-vetted by legal organisations before they go up) and a rational counter-view can now be visible at any point to balance out evangelical advertising.

Most people have recognised that ours is a gentle, philosophical advert aimed at non-believers and fearful agnostics. We’re really pleased that the ASA has recognised this too. At last, we have a truly free voice – and it feels good.

See the official post over on the ABC website.

And the official adjudication:

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has concluded that the “There’s probably no God” bus ad campaign by the British Humanist Association is not in breach of the advertising code.  The ASA will therefore not launch an investigation and the case is now closed.

Here is the UK’s Advertising Standards Authority adjudication in full.
