July 1st 2009?

Two thousand and nine is half gone, already.

So fast. It seems like I only wrote this a couple of months ago.

On the other hand, someone I wrote about a little less time ago now seems like ancient history; this guy. Remember him?

Happy 40th: Concorde

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Forty years ago today this machine first took to the skies.

Concorde

Concorde

Celebrations are taking place to mark the 40th anniversary of the first UK test flight by Concorde, from Filton to RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

On the 9 April 1969, the plane flew for 22 minutes over the Bristol Channel, then landed at the airbase.

I spent twenty-nine years of my life living and working just a few miles from the runways at Heathrow Airport, my house and work right under the flight paths, and I can honestly say that I never tired of watching (and hearing!) the various Concorde aircraft take off and land.

It really was an incredible machine, and is sorely missed.

Another Valentines Day post, this time from seven years ago;

Git Yer Flowerz ‘Ere Darlin’

According to that post, the British were spending £22 million on flowers alone on Valentines Day back in those days.

I wonder how much they will be spending this year? Taking into account the present state of the UK’s finances, probably about, say, £50.00?

Things We’d Like To See Less Of In 2004

I still agree with the Victoria Beckham comment. But what was ‘Ironed hair’?

Blam! Blam! Blam! Blam! Lennon Is Shot

Twenty eight years ago today John Lennon was shot dead in New York. The BBC News website has an article today about how they still remember the event annually in Japan.

I clearly remember the day he was killed, too, as I wrote here four years ago. Not because I was a big fan of Lennon – I am a little too young for that – but because I think that it was the first time I had ever seen a mass public reaction to the death of just one person. It was quite a shock to see.

In my post four years ago I asked if people reading remembered where they were and what they were doing that day, and I recieved some interesting comments and emails. Unfortunately, after various server moves and software changes those comments are now lost, but if you remember that day – leave a comment on this post. It will be interesting to read.
