Useful: FlightStats Flight Tracking

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

This morning I was looking for a website to live track a flight my daughter was taking from London to Zurich.

air approach track into zurich

However, finding live tracking that covered EU air routes was not as easy as I imagined. The US is well covered, but the EU? Not so much.

After much searching around I eventually discovered FlightStats, which offers just what I was looking for; live mapping, flight status, arrival, departure and delay times, and even free email alerts.

All in all, a very useful tool for EU flight tracking. Recommended.

Spain, Portugal, And The Price Of Gas.

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

Having said in my last post that Portugal cannot be beaten, there is one way in which Spain is a whole lot more attractive than Portugal, and that’s in the price of gas.

Gas prices in Spain and Portugal

Gas prices in Spain and Portugal

Spain is on the left. The price of gas in Spain is around 25 cents per litre less expensive than it is in Portugal.

That makes it basically free for me to drive to Spain and back, as long as I fill my gas tank when I am there.

Good luck to the Spanish, but that kind of price difference really shows just how badly we here in Portugal are getting ripped off every time we pay for gas.

The British Foreign Office Locate Service – No Thanks

Saturday, November 1st, 2008

The British Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office is encouraging Brits living and/or travelling overseas to register their name, whereabouts, phone numbers, travel plans, residence status, purpose of travel, and so on, on a continually updating basis with the new FCO ‘Locate’ service.

Why?

This information can be used by FCO to alert citizens to relevant travel concerns as well as contact citizens in the event of an emergency.

Right…

So they would like me to tell them, ‘them’ being the British Government, the biggest Big Brother Government of them all, exactly where I am and what I am doing at all times even though I no longer live in the UK, and have not lived in the UK for sixteen years?

I think I’ll pass, thanks all the same.

Tea And Biscuits For All Arriving In Britain

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Every person flying into Britain will be offered a free cup of tea and a biscuit in an ambitious, if eccentric, plan to make the country more cheerful.

I was originally going to say that it would take so, so, much more than the offer of a cup of tea and a biscuit to ever tempt me back to that dull and rainy little island in the North Sea.

But then I remembered Digestive biscuits, and you know, maybe I could be tempted to make a quick visit after all.
