The Murder Of Anna Politkovskaya
Tuesday, October 10th, 2006The name may have changed, but the KGB hasn’t changed methods, nor attitude:
”President Vladimir Putin yesterday broke his silence over the murder of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya. In a conversation with the US president, George Bush, Mr Putin vowed that ‘all necessary efforts will be made for an objective investigation into the tragic death’.”
Frankly, I am lost for words. Reporters sans Fronteires, however, are not:
”…we demand an independent international investigation (for example, under the aegis of the United Nations or the Council of Europe), because it would be unthinkable to let the Russian police and judicial authorities handle this case on their own. They have already demonstrated their inability to solve the murders of journalists who angered the authorities. The still unsolved murder of Paul Klebnikov, the editor of the Russian edition of Forbes, in July 2004 is an obvious example.”
