The Murder Of Anna Politkovskaya

Tuesday, October 10th, 2006

The name may have changed, but the KGB hasn’t changed methods, nor attitude:

President Vladimir Putin yesterday broke his silence over the murder of the journalist Anna Politkovskaya. In a conversation with the US president, George Bush, Mr Putin vowed that ‘all necessary efforts will be made for an objective investigation into the tragic death’.”

Frankly, I am lost for words. Reporters sans Fronteires, however, are not:

”…we demand an independent international investigation (for example, under the aegis of the United Nations or the Council of Europe), because it would be unthinkable to let the Russian police and judicial authorities handle this case on their own. They have already demonstrated their inability to solve the murders of journalists who angered the authorities. The still unsolved murder of Paul Klebnikov, the editor of the Russian edition of Forbes, in July 2004 is an obvious example.”

Making Money By Standing Still

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

So a photographer and an inanimate object are sitting in a bar, drinking a few beers…

Inanimate Object: “So, Mr Photographer, we have both been working pretty solidly for the past seven months, then. And we have both taken an awful lot of photographs, have we not?”
Photographer: “Yep, we have indeed, and I don’t know about you but I’m tired. It was a tough seven months, wasn’t it”.

IO: “No, I found my work quite easy, actually, and very rewarding financially”.
Photog: “Really? I did well too, but if you don’t mind me asking, how much did you make?”.
IO: “Oh, around one point two million pounds sterling, tax free”.
Photog: “Wow”.

I’m clearly in the wrong type of photography, I should be a motorway speed camera.

They Cannot Be Serious, Can They?

Tuesday, September 27th, 2005

OK, so we have all read hundreds of stories about ‘Political Correctness Gone Mad’, and usually they are pretty funny—but this one here is , in my opinion, truly insane.

“A West Yorkshire hospital has banned visitors from cooing at new-born babies over fears their human rights are being breached. A statement from Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax said staff had held an advice session to highlight the need for respect and dignity for patients. On one ward there is a doll featuring the message: “What makes you think I want to be looked at?”

And, there’s more…

‘Debbie Lawson, neo-natal manager at the hospital’s special care baby unit, said: “Cooing should be a thing of the past because these are little people with the same rights as you or me”.

You couldn’t make it up, could you.

Action Man

Before APNews published this:

“This image of what appears to be a captured US soldier was posted on an Iraqi militant website, Tuesday Feb. 1, 2005. According to the website, the militants threatened to behead the hostage in 72 hours unless the Americans release Iraqi prisoners. The claim could not be verified.(AP Photo).”

They should really, really, have seen this.

Oh, dear.

DDoS On Toast

Sunday, January 9th, 2005

Breakfast today, then: tea, toast and tasty server recovery.

After two ‘interesting’ rounds of a serious DDoS attack against the server on which this website lives, closely followed by an unrelated (but unbelievably timed) primary drive failure on the self same server, it appears that wholesome webloggy goodness has now been restored.

Phew.

And now, uber-busy as I am, it’s back to work I go. Back soon.
