Television dramas and me are not often to be found in the same room, intentionally, but last night I did watch House Of Saddam on BBC 2, and you know, it really was quite good.
It is a four part ‘mini-series’, so if you did not watch part one last night you will have to start at part two next week – but catching up with what is going on should not be too difficult. The production itself is unusual – it kind of comes across as a mixture of Dallas and The Sopranos, but, somehow, it works.
I am not sure that anyone knows the truth of what really went on behind closed doors in the Saddam household, and most of us would probably be horrified if we did, but as far as factual accuracy regarding events surrounding Saddam’s rise to power, and the brutality and sheer ruthlessness involved in it, last night’s episode was as accurate as the few available historical facts allow.
I am not going to write too much about the show here as it will too easily turn this quick ‘heads-up’ into a spoiler, but suffice to say that if you get a chance to watch the remaining three parts (and maybe catch up with part one on YouTube, or whichever media site takes your fancy) then it is worth it. Part two is on next Wednesday at 9pm
